Julia McCann

d. December 3, 2017

The marvelous Julia Isabelle "Belle" Starks McCann passed away peacefully in Biloxi, Mississippi, Sunday, December 3, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.  Belle was born in Mobile, Alabama, but spent most of her life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, specifically in Ocean Springs and Biloxi, which she loved.
Belle graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1956 and later, at the age of 47, completed her bachelor's degree in computer science from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.  Her working life was spent as a civilian contractor with rotations in Biloxi, Taiwan and Washington D.C.  She also worked for government contractors at Stennis and in Pascagoula.
Belle was an avid reader, a devout fan of the New Orleans Saints, and a Mardi Gras queen in all her glory.  She loved being on the water, picking berries with her grandchildren, sharing her knowledge of historical events and locations, catching up with old classmates and friends, and above all, she loved her family dearly.  Her laughter filled every room and her spirit filled every heart.
A very significant part of Belle's life was her 38 years of sobriety through the AA community.  She loved and was loved by her AA family and her absence is felt far and wide. Belle's family would like to extend their deepest thanks and appreciation to the AA community for their love and support of Belle and her family over the past many years.
Belle is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel P. Starks Sr. and Julia Miller Starks; her brother, Pat Starks; her son, James Michael Moniot; and her niece, Sharon Starks.
Belle is survived by two siblings, Paul Starks (Nelda) and Sue Starks; her daughter, Margaret Moniot (Jim Fox), her sons, Stephen Moniot and Eddie Stackhouse (Faye Real); her grandchildren, Leslie Moniot, Colin Moniot (Kristina), Meghan Taylor and Ryan Taylor (Niecy Burton); her three great-grandchildren, Kira & Braden Moniot, and Elsie Jane Lalas; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Belle loved to help others and her compassion and support was felt by many.  She lived her life fully, with great enthusiasm, and on her own terms.  She was one of the magical ones.  We love you Nana and miss you dearly!
A celebration of life will be held for family and close friends at the home of Belle's daughter in Ocean Springs on Saturday, December 9 at 1:00pm.  For more information please contact a family member.
