Julia S. Carter, 76, of Biloxi, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2016 in Biloxi.
Julia was born August 16 in Wilmington, NC. Her father's Air Force service took the family to Mountain Home, Idaho, and Japan before settling in Biloxi. She attended Biloxi High School before she graduated from MSCW with a B.A. in English and History and obtained a Master's in Education from USM. She taught English in the Biloxi School System for 33 years, retiring in 1995.
She is survived by her family: husband of 40 years Raymond, sister, Linda Galloway; daughter, Lorena Bonnett Weinkle and her husband, Scott, and two granddaughters, Ellen and Emily of Marietta, GA; son, James Bonnett and his wife, Gale of Biloxi, and four step-children and several step-grandchildren.
She was active in Biloxi's First United Methodist Church as past Chairman of the Administrative Board, Finance Team Chair, Worship Chair, Financial Secretary, and Treasurer for the Challengers Sunday School Class for several years. She and Raymond joined Beauvoir UMC in March 2010. Julia was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa (past state president), a member of PEO, and Kiwanis (past president, treasurer, secretary, Lt. Governor, and District Trustee). She also served as District Chair for the International Foundation, a member of the Architectural and Historic Review Commission and the Planning Commission. Julia was also a member as well as a volunteer for the Gulf Coast Carnival Association and secretary for the Mardi Gras Museum Board. Her awards include: Grand Cross of Color, Outstanding Young Educator, Outstanding Young Woman of 1972, Educator of the Year, BHS annual dedication, Who's Who, Hixson Diamond Level 2, Tablet of Honor, Nash-Maier Tablet of Honor, River of Life Fellow, J. T. Roberts Fellow, and a Walter Zeller Fellow. Twice she was recognized as Outstanding Secretary for the LA-MS-TN District of Kiwanis International. Chapter E initiated Julia in 1993; she has served as chaplain, recording secretary, vice president, treasurer, and as president.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 16th from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Road, Biloxi. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Biloxi National Cemetery.
