Joseph Winford Machen, Sr., of Mobile, AL, and former resident of Saucier, MS, age 90, went home to the Lord on February 5, 2013. He died from natural causes peacefully at his home.
Joseph was a man of great devotion to his family and the Catholic Church. He also possessed a life long passion for learning.
He was born in Montgomery, AL, to Thomas Jefferson and Dorne Isbell Machen and was the beloved husband for 66 years to Maxine Poirier Machen, who predeceased him in 2009. He is survived by his sister Olivia (Machen) Ryan of Richland Hills, TX, and his children, Joseph and Carol Machen II of Mobile, AL, Michael and Enid Machen of Saucier, MS, Timothy and Dottie Machen of Gulfport, MS, Madeleine (Machen) and David Lord of Gulfport, MS, Stephen Machen of Warner Robbins, GA, and Christopher and Johanna Machen of Mobile, AL; grandchildren, Joseph Machen III, Todd and Kristina Machen, Angela (Machen) and Robby Grice, Candace (Machen) and Chris Holmes, Matthew Yonko, Amanda (Lord) and Wayne Gilbert, Summer (Lord) and Donnie Bosarge, Joshua and Amber Lord, Maggie (Machen) and Matt Sellers, Stephanie Machen, Michael Machen, Bryan and Claire Machen, Sarah Machen, and Brett Machen; great-grandchildren, Joseph Machen IV, Maxton Machen, Abigail Machen, Miranda Holder, Parker Holder, Rowland Yonko, Alison Yonko, Zackary Grice, Cade Gilbert, Bailey Gilbert, Jackson Gilbert, Delancey Bosarge, Jack Sellers, Mason Sellers, and Hadley Machen.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 9, 2013, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Mobile,
AL. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, February 15, 2013, at 11:00 am at Biloxi National Cemetery. The family would appreciate memorials made to the KWVA Wounded Warrior Fund, P. O. Box 51, Lewes, DE 19958, in lieu of flowers.
Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, is in charge of arrangements.
