Mr. Joseph James Casano, age 91, resident of Gulfport, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2009.
Mr. Casano was born in New Orleans, LA and graduated from Gulfport High School. He joined the Army Air Corp at the beginning of WWII. He was a waist gunner on a B-17 and was shot down over Austria in 1943. He spent 15 months in a German prison camp as a POW, and received a Purple Heart for wounds sustained in the parachute jump. He was one of the original founders of the MS Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, in which he served as Chairman for many years. He served as a past commander of the Joe Graham American Legion Post in Gulfport. He was a proud member of the Magnolia Chapter of the POW Club. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Gulfport where he was confirmed. He was co-owner/operator of Pete the Top Man automotive shop, and a co-founder of the Bayou View Golf Course in the 60's. He was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Etoy Boatner Casano; parents, Peter J. Casano, Sr. and Katherine Prinz Casano; brother, Peter J. Casano, Jr.; and sister, Alice Casano Murla.
Mr. Casano is survived by his sons, Joseph J. Casano, Jr. and his wife Kicki of Diamondhead, Jerald G. Casano and his wife Susan of Indianola, MS, and Ronald J. Casano and his wife Cathy of Gulfport; grandchildren, Cassia Casano Gabbert, Marcus Casano, Justin Casano, and Eric Casano; and 5 great- grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 15, 2009, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Road, Biloxi, where friends may visit from 12:30 p.m. until the funeral service begins at 1:45 p.m. Burial with full military honors will follow services at Biloxi National Cemetery.
