~~Joseph "Joe" Boardman, Jr., age 88, of Gulfport, passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017, in Gulfport, MS.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph F. Boardman; his mother, Gertrude Weston Boardman; and his brother, Henry Boardman.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Green Boardman; their two daughters, Janie Boardman Seal of Pace, FL, and Joli (Gerry) Boardman Pecht of Houston, TX; sisters, Mary Boardman Roberts and Barbara (Bob) Boardman Hatch; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Joe was especially proud of his grandsons, Dillon (Caitlin) Seal, Connor Seal; and his great granddaughter, Evelyn.
Joe was a native of Handsboro, MS, and has lived on the MS Gulf Coast almost his entire life. He graduated from Gulfport High School in 1947, then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Military Police for 18 months. In 1953, he graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi as a Distinguished Military Graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Business. On January 5, 1957, Joe married Betty Green Boardman.
Joe worked 34 years in the Ready-Mixed Concrete industry, serving most of that time as President and Chairman of Coast Materials Company. He served as a director of Hancock Bank for 37 years. For 20 years, he served as Chairman of the Board of Hancock Holding Company. Joe served as Chairman of the Board of the National Ready-Mixed Concrete Association, a world-wide organization. He served as President of the MS Concrete Industries Association for two terms. He served as a director of the MS Coast Homebuilders Association for 20 years, and for 18 years, he served as a member of the Harrison County Development Commission. Joe was a director and Vice-President of the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce and a director of the Coast Crime Commission. He also served as an Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Joe was a longtime supporter of the University of Southern Mississippi. He served as President of the USM Alumni Association, and a director of the USM Foundation.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Nourishing Place, 630 Tennessee St., Gulfport, MS 39501, or Handsboro Presbyterian Church, 1304 Pass Rd., Gulfport, MS 39507. Joe made an anatomical gift to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, October 30, 2017, beginning at 9:30 am until the Memorial Service begins at 11:00 am at Handsboro Presbyterian Church, 1304 Pass Rd., Gulfport.
