John Thomas Withers, age 85, passed away Monday, June 24, 2013 in Kiln, MS.
Mr. Withers was a graduate of Carthage High School, Copiah Lincoln Junior College and the University of Southern Mississippi with a B.S. and M.Ed. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Korean War.
Mr. Withers was an educator, primarily in the Gulfport City Schools beginning in 1956, retiring in 1983.
Daddy loved his children, grandchildren (both natural ones and others he adopted through the years), biscuits & gravy, cornbread & milk, Shaws Catfish and the New Orleans Saints.
The family would like to give special thanks to Mike Sullivan, Mavie, Pat, Gloria and Sammy for taking such wonderful care of Daddy the last few years!
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bettye Lou Alford Withers; son, Richard Alan Withers; parents, John Henry and Florence Shoemaker Withers; brothers, Johnny N. Withers and Willie Van Withers; and brother-in-law, William Alford.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and Joseph Olson of Gulfport; beloved granddaughters, Abigail, Madeleine and Caroline Withers of Little Elm, TX; daughter-in-law and her husband, Stephanie and Jack Gregg; and nieces and nephews, Jamie, Leigh, Anita, Penn, Kira, Kathryn and Blake.
Private burial service will be held at a later date and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Gulfport; USM, Hattiesburg or Long Beach; an institute of higher learning of donor's preference; J.T. Leggett Memorial United Methodist Church, Biloxi; or to a charity of one's choice.
