John Ellis Williams, M.D., passed away on November 5, 2012. Dr. Williams was born and raised in Jackson, MS. He graduated from Central High School and the University of Southern Mississippi. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Following medical school and internship he joined the United States Navy. He completed a general surgery residency at USNH, St. Albans, NY and later served as a surgeon with the First Marine Division in Da Nang, Vietnam. During that tour of duty he received the Bronze Star for outstanding service. Upon completion of service in the Navy, in 1971, he settled in Long Beach, MS, joining the general surgery practice of Drs. Archibald Hewes and Ed Hamilton. He continued his practice of general surgery at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, MS, during which time he served as Chief of Surgery, Chair of the Disaster Committee, as well as numerous other committee positions. In 1993, he closed his surgical practice and remained on the medical staff in both the Emergency and Hyperbarics Departments until retirement in 1999. During his time off, Dr. Williams traveled the world pursuing his passion of big game hunting and fishing and always had an interesting story or two to tell.
Preceding him in death are his parents, James A. and Alyeene A. Williams, and his brother, James A. Williams, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Annette Williams; his three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia Williams (New Orleans, LA), Kathleen and Steve Shiver (Long Beach, MS), Nancy and Franco Valobra (New Orleans, LA); grandchildren, Maximo and Luna Valobra (New Orleans, LA); his sister and husband, Lillene and Aaron Condon (Oxford, MS), and sister-in-law, Josephine Williams (Gulfport, MS).
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff of Camellia Home Health, Dixie White House Nursing Home, 4C of Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, and Odyssey Hospice for their compassionate care of Dr. Williams.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice.
A visitation will be on Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME on Commission Road in Long Beach. A private burial in Long Beach Cemetery will be held at a later date.
