John Tomsik, age 86, of N. Biloxi, passed away on September 11, 2015.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Julia Tomsik, his brothers, Andrew, George, and Joseph Tomsik, and his sisters, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary, and Ava.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Florence Tomsik, his children Dr. John (Terri) Tomsik, Dr. Mark (Darlene) Tomsik, Dr. Marlene Skulskie, Mary (Kenneth) Stanford, Brenda (Gregory) Quigley, Kathleen (Robert) Murphy, and Teresa (Timothy) Holland, 17 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
John was born and grew up in Natrona, PA. Since his father died when he was only a child, he started working at an early age to support and take care of his beloved mother. At 17 years of age, he joined the military and was sent to Boca Raton, FL for Ground Control Radar training and then he was assigned to MacDill Air Force Base in Ground Control Approach maintenance. He later was transferred to Templehof Air Base, Germany and participated in the Berlin Airlift. Before being sent to KAFB, John returned home to marry his hometown sweetheart, Florence. At Keesler, he taught courses in electronics, radar, and computer. He then was transferred to Kingston, NY where he was a training liaison at one of the first IBM plants. He had the opportunity to go back to Templehof Air Base, Germany, along with his family, where he remained as Chief of Maintenance in the Strategic Air Command until he retired. After he retired, he worked at Ingall's Shipyard installing radio equipment. He then returned to KAFB as a Computer Training Specialist. He received a BS degree in Industrial and Vocation Education and Master's degree in education from the Univ. of So. Mississippi. He taught his family at an early age to work hard and never give up on their dreams. His influence motivated all of his children to earn college degrees. He was very proud of his family and strongly encouraged them to succeed. He was a loving husband and father as well as a compassionate and generous person. He loved to build and fix anything. He freely gave his time and expertise in helping all of children build their homes. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in D'Iberville were he served an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.
Visitation will be on Thursday, September 17, 2015 from 10-11am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am in the church. Burial will be in the Biloxi National Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to St. Vincent DePaul Society at Sacred Heart Church.
The family would like to thank the staff of Canon Hospice and Raymond, Sue, and Cassandra with Praetorian Home Health Care. John died with his children and grandchildren near him. He will be missed and remembered always by his wife, children and family.
