John ""Jack"" Redmond Penland, 87, passed away Monday, May 18, 2015 in Gulfport. He retired from Johnson Outboard, a division of Outboard Marine Corporation, as an area service manager covering the panhandle of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. He traveled and healed sick outboard motors in the BASS tournament circuit. The only outboard motor Mr. Penland was unable to quickly repair during a tournament, unfortunately, was Tom Mann's in the 1974 Classic. ""Somebody forgot to mix oil with the gas, and after Tom got a little ways out on the lake, the motor completely froze up,"" Penland related. Although Mr. Penland repairs most outboard motors dockside, he and his Johnson courtesy boat an 18-foot Terry bass rig, occasionally made ""house calls"" to fisherman stalled on the lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lucille Penland; brothers, Robert and Paul Penland; sister, Audrey Wood; daughter, Judith Penland Webber; granddaughter, Jaclyn Webber.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rosalie Penland; daughters, Mary Penland Speyrer, Kathleen Penland Keel and Patrice Penland Madigan; sister, Pat Deutch (Martin); grandchildren, Alan Speyrer, Leah Speyrer Spilling, David Webber, Dr. Murray E. Keel, III, Abigail Keel, Isaac Keel, Rebecca Keel and Thomas Madigan; Allie Speyrer, Abbie Speyrer and Gwen Spilling.
