John Richard Cox

John Richard Cox, a beloved member of the Gulfport community, passed away on Friday, August 4, 2023, at the age of 89. A dedicated and hardworking individual, John left a lasting impact on those who knew him. Born on March 28, 1934, in Evansville, Indiana, he was the son of John F. Cox and Sadie P. Cox.

John graduated from Gulfport High School in 1952. During his time at Gulfport High, he was actively involved in numerous sports and school clubs. His exceptional contributions to the school community were recognized during his senior year when he was honored with the title of Mr. GHS.

After completing his education, John embarked on a remarkable career in the pharmaceutical industry. He devoted an impressive 35 years to Sterling Drugs, where he made significant contributions that earned him the admiration and respect of his colleagues.

Outside of his career accomplishments, John was an active member of the Gulfport Elks Club. His dedication and service were acknowledged when he received the prestigious title of Elk of the Year. Additionally, for over five decades, John selflessly coached peewee sports in Gulfport, leaving an indelible mark on countless young lives.

In his leisure time, John found joy in tending to his yard and spending time around his pool. He also enjoyed occasional trips to casinos for entertainment and relaxation. Family held a special place in John's heart, and he cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren.

John Richard Cox was preceded in death by his parents, John F. Cox and Sadie P. Cox; his brothers Ralph P. Cox and Robert Cox; as well as his sister Marjorie Sellier. He leaves behind a legacy that will be forever cherished by those who knew him.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 70 years, George Ann Cox; their two sons, John Cox Jr. and James Cox, along with his wife Cynthia; as well as his two granddaughters: granddaughter Jamie Cox Myrick, and her husband Alex, and their daughter Olivia James Myrick; and granddaughter Sarah Cox.

Services to honor and celebrate John's life will be held on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at the Riemann Family Funeral Home in Long Beach. The funeral home is located at 19130 Commission Rd, Long Beach, MS 39560.  The visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at Evergreen Cemetery in Gulfport. 

The family would like to express their special thanks to Vital Care Hospice, and to his caregiver, Sissy Stevens.

John Richard Cox will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, and a respected member of the community. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to those he loved will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have shared in his life's journey. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
