He was a graduate of Gulfport High School and Ole Miss with a BS degree in business.
Joel was preceded in death by his father, Robert ""Bob"" Johnson, owner of Johnson Pharmacies in Gulfport, MS. He is survived by his mother, Rachel S. Johnson Capps, his step-father, William ""Corky"" Capps, his brother, Donald K. Johnson, nieces, Natalie and Jackie Johnson, great-nephews, Ryder and Keaton.
A private graveside service was held on September 10, 2014, in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
