Joe Shuff, age 98, passed away on July 9, 2026. A native of Allen Parish, Louisiana, Joe lived a remarkable life defined by service to his country, a strong work ethic, and a deep devotion to his family.

At just 17 years old, Joe joined the United States Army Air Corps, which later became the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country for 20 years as an aircraft welder and fabrication shop foreman, working on B-29s, B-47s, B-52s, KC-97 tankers, and other support aircraft. His military career took him to bases throughout the United States and overseas, including Germany, Morocco, England, and Canada. While stationed in Germany, Joe supported the Berlin Airlift, helping provide vital supplies to West Berlin.

Following his military retirement, Joe continued his career in fabrication, working for a fabrication shop and later for Olin Chemical. After a layoff from Olin, he began working at PPG, where he spent three years as a welder before becoming the fabrication shop foreman, a position he held for 27 years.

Joe believed in staying active and living life to the fullest. He loved riding his bicycle and going to the gym. For many years, he rode an impressive 20 to 40 miles a day. Even into his 80s and early 90s, he continued riding 10 to 15 miles a day a testament to his determination and remarkable spirit.

Known affectionately as “Papa” and “PawPaw,” Joe treasured the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Throughout his 98 years, he approached life with honesty, gratitude, and a positive attitude, leaving behind an example that will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Birdie Marcantel Shuff, who he missed dearly; his parents, Mack and Doris Shuff; his sister, Marie; and his brothers, Matthew, Burchman, and M.J.

He is survived by his only child, Phyllis Hamburg and her husband, Raymond; two grandsons; three great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

Joe’s long life was one of dedication, perseverance, and service. His legacy will live on through the family he cherished, the country he proudly served, and the many lives he touched along the way.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Biloxi National Cemetery, with United States Air Force military honors.
