Joan McEwen passed away peacefully on January 17, 2018 after a brief illness. She was born in Bogalusa, Louisiana and graduated from University of Louisiana Lafayette in 1955 where she was a member of Pi Gamma Mu and Phi Alpha Theta honorary fraternities and Delta Epsilon Mu sorority, also known as Kappa Delta.
Before moving to Fort Walton Beach, Florida in 1974, she enjoyed living in Louisiana, Arkansas, Maryland/Washington DC, Ohio, New York, California, Alabama and finally Gulfport, Mississippi. Joan remained in touch with friends she made throughout the U.S. She attended the Hurlburt Air Force Base Chapel in Fort Walton Beach and later the Chapel at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi. Joan was a member of the Retired Officers Wives Club, the Republican Women of Okaloosa County, and MOAA, Military Officers Association of America.
Joan touched the lives of everyone she met with her sweetness and humor, and was always ready for fun and adventure.
She was preceded in death by her son Charles, husband Joe D. McEwen, Jr. and son-in-law Gary Hammergren.
She is survived by her sister Lorene; son Marcus; daughter Helen; and three grandchildren, Melissa, Abigail and Igor.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018 from 11:00 PM - 12:00 PM with funeral services at 12:00 PM at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvior Road, Biloxi, Mississippi.
Interment will be at Barrancus National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida.
