Jerrell R. "Smitty" Smith, age 84, a lifelong resident of Gulfport, passed away Friday, January 20, 2017 in Gulfport.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Velma Smith; and his parents, P.L. and Lorine Smith.
Jerrell is survived by his daughter, Karen Shaw (Ricky); his son, Larry Smith (Elizabeth); his brother, Elvin Smith; his sister, Gwen Cotton (Dan); and his grandchild, Amanda Smith.
Jerrell is a graduate of the Class of 1952 at Gulfport High School, served in the U.S. Navy, and retired from Entex Gas Company after 43 years of service. He is a lifelong member of the Handsboro United Methodist Church and a member of the Lions Club for many years. Jerrell always made it a personal challenge to brighten someone's day with humor; within three minutes he would have you laughing out loud.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Handsboro United Methodist Church, 2333 Demaret Drive, Gulfport, MS 39507.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport with a visitation for family and friends one hour prior to the service. Burial with full military honors will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
