Jere Hinson Scruggs, Sr., age 83, of Gulfport, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2013.
Mr. Scruggs was born in Clinton, TN, to Henry Scruggs and Fannie Giles Scruggs. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After his military career, he worked for the Civil Service in the supply department. He was a member of Gateway United Methodist Church in Gulfport, and was a former baseball umpire for Little League in Lyman. He also served past post-commander for the VFW in Gulfport and was a 33rd degree Mason, being a member of the Orange Grove Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Evelyn Weimer Scruggs of Gulfport; children, Jere Hinson Scruggs, Jr. (Dianne) of Mobile, AL, Dorothy Jean Benz (Frank) of Diamondhead, Henry Clayton Scruggs (Laurie) of Lizana, Kenneth Edward Scruggs (Jan) of Gulfport, Jack Quinton Scruggs of Gulfport, and Kathryn Lynn Scruggs of Gulfport; sister, Mary Griggs and Carolyn Scruggs; 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2013, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 25, 2013, at Gateway United Methodist Church, Gulfport, in the church sanctuary at 10:00 a.m. Friends may visit one hour prior to services in the church's fellowship hall.
Burial will follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens.
