Jarvis M. Bishop

Jarvis M. Bishop, age 89, passed away in Gulfport, MS on Wednesday, December 30, 2015. He was born in Jones County on July 9, 1926 to James M. Bishop and Margaret Heidelberg. He moved to Star, MS at the age of 5, graduated from Star High School, enlisted in the Navy and served on the destroyer, USS Burns, during World War II in the Pacific. He moved to Meridian, MS and married his wife of 66 years, Norma Jane Purvis. In 1955, they moved to Gulfport where he was a great gardener, loved to fish and hunt, loved blue grass and country music. He loved to travel and went to the Grand Ole Opry 60 times. He belonged to the Burton Memorial United Methodist Church for 56 years. Jarvis retired as Postmaster from the US Postal Service in Kiln, MS. He also worked for several years in the Gulfport Post Office.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, James Bishop, Floyd H. (Alice) Bishop; his sisters, Tressie O. Broome, Leslie (Leon) Goff and his grandson, Jared Seth Bishop.
Those who he leaves behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Norma Jane Purvis Bishop; his sons, Curtis (Susan) Bishop and Justin M. Bishop; his daughters, Charlotte Fagan, and Cindy (Lenny)Stafford; his grandsons, Gordon Rettig, Bran Bishop, Matthew Horn, and Caleb Fagan; his granddaughters, Terri Jackson, Amy Horn, Tara Rettig, Savannah Stafford, and Emily Fagan; his great-grandsons, Blayton and Brylan Jackson, and Jett Bishop; his great-granddaughters, Jayden Bishop and Kaylinn Rettig; his sister, Mary Penn; several nieces and nephews especially Beverly and Charles Broome; and lots of friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at 2pm at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery in Gulfport.
