James Edward Shields, born on January 11, 1942, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, passed away on August 30, 2025, in Gulfport, Mississippi. A devoted husband, father, brother, and a distinguished veteran, he leaves behind a legacy of service and love that will be cherished by his family and friends.
James dedicated a significant portion of his life to military service, beginning his journey in the Navy before transitioning to the Air Force, where he achieved the rank of Captain. He proudly served as Squadron Commander at Keesler Airforce Base and was stationed in various parts of the world, including Germany and England. His commitment to duty and leadership both in and out of uniform was a testament to his character. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued to share his knowledge and skills through civil service, teaching management information systems.
James was an educated man, having earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tampa. He was not only a committed professional but also a passionate individual who enjoyed a variety of hobbies. His love for sailing, skiing, and motorboats filled many happy days, and he often delighted in traveling the globe with his family.
He is survived by his sons, Christopher Shields and Byron Marlow; his sister, Nancy Scism; and his brother, John R. Shields. James was predeceased by his beloved parents, Chester and Norma Shields, and his wife of 53 years, Barbara Shields, whose memory he cherished deeply.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during the visitation at Riemann Family Funeral Home in Biloxi, Mississippi, on September 9, 2025, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM. A funeral service will follow at the same location, beginning at 12:30 PM with dear friend, John Sullivan officiating. James will then be laid to rest at Biloxi National Cemetery following the burial service at 1:30 PM with Full Military Honors.
The loss of James Edward Shields is felt profoundly by all those who knew him. His unwavering spirit and the love he cultivated in his life will continue to resonate in the hearts of his loved ones for years to come.
