James Seglund

James A. Seglund was born in Munising, Michigan on the shores of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula. After graduating from high school in 1941 he moved to Detroit to seek work as the depression years had little to offer in his hometown. In 1942 he enlisted in the Army Air Corp. and assigned to Arial Photography School at Denver. Later he qualified to be part of the Army Specialized Training Program and enrolled in Bradley University. He served in Italy and was discharged from service in December 1945.
He married Margaret Lind in Denver in January, 1946 and entered the University of Michigan earning a Master's Degree in Geology in 1949. He immediately went to work for Texaco in New Orleans. He was promoted to District Geologist in Shreveport and later served as District Geologist in Lafayette.
In 1956 he resigned from Texaco to form the petroleum consulting firm of Rodgers, Seglund and Shaw Assoc. In 1967 the firm was dissolved and J.A. Seglund Inc. was formed to be engaged in the search for oil and gas. He was involved with church affairs serving as Lay Speaker. He then became Lay Speaker for the Methodist District speaking to many churches. He served on Building Committee for the Methodist Hospital in Eastern New Orleans and for the Student Church built near the Tulane Campus. He was President of New Orleans Geological Society, Chairman of the Society of Independent Earth Scientists, member of American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Society of Petroleum Engineers, Landmen's Society of New Orleans, Metairie Country Club, a Founder of the New Orleans City Club, member of Foundation of American Petroleum Geologists, He was active in New Orleans Mardi Gras as a member of the Krewe of Toth and his three daughters served as Maids on different years. Was a rabid Saint's football fan with season tickets from 1967 to 2012.
In 1980, he purchased a Lodge home on a lake in the Upper Peninsula where he and Margaret spent their summers. He entered semi-retirement but closed his New Orleans office in 1986. Much of the 1980's and early 90's were spent traveling. He was selected by the Eisenhower People to People State Department Program with a small group of other oil experienced people to go to China in 1984 speaking to China's oil professionals. He wrote technical papers which appeared in the Oil and Gas Journal, American Association Petroleum Geologists Journal, and The World Oil Publication. He presented papers before various geological societies. He became active in exploring in exploring again in 1989 with activities in New Brunswick, Canada. With other investors, they began acquiring oil leases in 1991 and exploration continues. In 1996, he and Margaret moved from Metairie, LA to the Harbor Townhome they owned in Diamondhead. In 1998 they sold and moved into a rental house. His wife, Margaret, died in January 1999.
On October 2, 2000 he re-married to Lee Fredian. They built a home together in Diamondhead and lived happily ever after. They were involved in the Mardi Gras season. He was on the building committee for the Diamondhead Methodist Church. He was the first President of the Board of Diamondhead Continuing Education. He served as the first King of Olympus. He was the founder of the Krewe of Underfunded and served as its Emperor. He continued to enjoy playing his piano, golfing, bowling, and his friendships.
James was preceeded in death by his parents; his brothers; Wilfred, Ragner, and Richard Seglund and his late wife Margaret Lind Seglund. He is survived by his wife Lenora ""Lee"" Morris Seglund, of Diamondhead; his three children, Nancy LaPorte, Lori Vogt both of New Orleans,LA., and Deborah Seglund of San Francisco, CA., and two grandchildren; Oswald LaPorte and Jarred Turley.
A Memorial service will be held at Diamondhead Community Church Wednesday July 10, 2013 at 3:00 PM. Following the service there will be a Celebration of life at Diamondhead Country Club.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Diamondhead Community Church or Diamondhead SPCA.
