James Davis Purser, a respected veteran, devoted family man, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2026, at his residence in Gulfport, Mississippi. Born on October 7, 1951, in Gulfport, James’s life was marked by service, commitment, and an enduring faith that guided him through his many endeavors.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, James served his country with distinction for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Quartermaster Senior Chief (QMCS). His military career was a foundation of discipline and leadership, principles he carried into the next chapter of his life. Following his retirement from the Navy, he applied his skills and work ethic in the civilian sector, spending many years working with Ball Heating & Air, where he was a valued and respected employee.

James furthered his education by earning an Associate’s degree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, exemplifying his lifelong commitment to growth and learning. Beyond his professional and educational achievements, James was an avid runner and outdoor enthusiast. He found joy and solace in hiking, spending time at the beach, and embracing the natural beauty surrounding him. His faith was a cornerstone of his daily life, inspiring those around him and providing a source of strength through all of life’s journeys.

Family was at the heart of James’s world. He shared 48 cherished years of marriage with his beloved wife Evelyn Purser. Together, they nurtured a close-knit family who carry forward his legacy of love and dedication. He is survived by his daughter Kathy Pisut and her husband Matt; his son Keith Purser and his wife Jynette; and his grandchildren Gwyneth Pisut, Vivien Purser, Matthias Pisut, and Westley Purser. James’s family circle also included his loving sisters, Susan Coakley and her husband Alan, and Nancy Lopez and her husband Chuck, who stand alongside their loved ones in mourning his loss.

James was preceded in death by his father, Hubert Purser, and his mother, Alice Purser..

A memorial gathering to honor the life and legacy of James Davis Purser will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Riemann Family Funeral Home - Gulfport, located at 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS 39503. This gathering will provide friends and family the opportunity to come together to celebrate a remarkable life marked by loyalty, faith, and quiet strength.

On Monday, June 8, 2026, a Committal Service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m., at Biloxi National Cemetery. Friends are asked to arrive at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. (please follow the signs for Funeral Processions that will lead you to the gathering point on the main avenue.  The cemetery director will come over and lead the family and friends from that point and drive over to the Committal Shelter.  

James’s absence leaves a profound void, but his enduring spirit, his love for family, and his service to community and country will continue to resonate with all who knew him. His life stands as a testament to dedication, honor, and heartfelt devotion—a legacy treasured by those who loved him most.
