Obituary

James "Jim" Watkins, age 86, of Long Beach, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Watkins; and his parents, Lamar and Lucy Watkins.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Camille Watkins; children, Kim (Richard) Strebeck and Kiley (Carol) Watkins; sibling, Nell Hollomon; grandchildren, Phillip (Erin) Watkins, Chelsey (Shawn) Garcia, Jordan (Brittany) Strebeck, Allyson (Brandon) Holzbach, and John Marc (Alexis) Strebeck; great grandchildren, Matt Garcia, Eli Bird, Waylon Garcia, Artemis Watkins, Noah Kate Holzbach, and Elianah Watkins; other relatives, Alice Ann McCutcheon, Kay Miller, Joy Little, and Fred (Sarah) Little; many nephews, nieces, cousins and their families; as well as a multitude of friends who were like family.

Jim's early education began at Crystal Springs High School, followed by further studies at the University of New Orleans. His career was marked by important roles at Cole Brothers and Fox, as well as Blue Cross Blue Shield, where he worked within Automated Health Systems.

His service to his country was a significant part of his life. Jim served in the United States Air Force as a translator in Germany, working with top secret security clearances. He also was a Sergeant in the Mississippi Air National Guard Reserves and was honored with the United States Air Force Marksmanship Medal. Jim's commitment extended beyond his military service as he participated in the United States Air Force Basketball Team, showcasing his love for sports.

Music and sports were passions for Jim. He played a variety of stringed instruments and was an active member of church choirs. Sports also filled his life with joy, including jet skiing, snow skiing, participation in bowling leagues, and being an avid sports fan. Jim and his wife shared many travels across the nation and to foreign countries, embracing new experiences together.

Jim's faith was central to his life. He served as Chairman of Deacons at McLaurin Heights Baptist Church and Hopewell Baptist Church, and as a Deacon at First Baptist Church in Long Beach. His spiritual leadership was a source of strength and guidance within his community.

During his long battle with leukemia, Jim received compassionate care. Many thanks are extended to Dr. Allison Wall and her staff for their treatment, love, and encouragement. Gratitude is also given to the nurses and technicians at Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph Hospice Center. Friends and staff at First Baptist Church provided countless prayers, support, and love to Jim and his family throughout this challenging time.

A Celebration of Life for Jim will be at First Baptist Church, Long Beach on Sunday, June 28, 2026. Visitation will be 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm, with the service starting at 4:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the MS Baptist Children's Village.
