Biloxi

October 29, 1951 – February 10, 2026

James “Pat” Patrick Gill, 74, passed away peacefully at his home in Biloxi, Mississippi, on February 10, 2026. A lifelong resident of the Gulf Coast, Pat was born on October 29, 1951, and spent his entire life rooted in the community he loved.

Pat graduated from Biloxi High School and went on to build something rare in today’s world — a business that endured for decades and became part of the fabric of the city. For more than 40 years, he owned and operated Smoke Shop LTD, later known as The Epitome in Fine Tobacco at Edgewater Mall, the mall’s longest-running retail store. What began as a business became something more: a gathering place. Pat didn’t just sell tobacco; he welcomed people in. He remembered names, stories, and preferences. Many customers became lifelong friends. A natural conversationalist, he genuinely enjoyed the exchange — the laughter, the debates, the storytelling, and the daily rhythm of familiar faces walking through the door. He had a way of making people feel comfortable, whether behind the counter of the tobacco shop or simply in passing conversation.

In his younger years, Pat was a talented bass player for the band Substantial Evidence, which had a strong local and regional following. Music was never just a hobby — it was part of who he was. Whether on stage or in the shop, he carried that same easy presence and connection with people.

Pat was a proclaimed Catholic, though he practiced his faith quietly and in his own way. He was not one for formal observance, but he carried his beliefs personally and without fanfare.

He often said, “None of us are getting out of this alive.” It was classic Pat — direct, a little wry, and deeply honest. Beneath the humor was an understanding that life is to be lived fully, friendships valued, and time never taken for granted.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Irvin Gill and Mary Quave Gill, and his sister, Mary Elizabeth Caillavet. He is survived by his daughter, Kristie Gill; his brother, Joe Gill Sr.; and a wide circle of friends and extended family who will remember his warm and inviting demeanor, his generosity, his loyalty to friendship, his musical talent, and the way he made people feel welcome.

A graveside service will be held at Southern Memorial Cemetery in Biloxi, where he will be laid to rest beside his parents, on Monday, February 16, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. A Catholic deacon will officiate the service.

Pat’s life was woven into Biloxi — into its businesses, its music, and its people. He leaves behind decades of conversations, friendships, and memories that will continue long after him.
