James McClintock Day

Mr. James M. “Jim” Day , age 93, of Gulfport died Saturday, June 24, 2023. Mr. Day was born on March 14, 1930, in Inverness, Mississippi to Mr. and Mrs. S. K. Day.

After high school, he attended the University of Mississippi where he majored in Pharmacy. While at the University of Mississippi, He was an active member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He graduated from the University of Mississippi School with a B.S. of Pharmacy in 1953.

He was the founder of Triplett Day Drugs Company located in Downtown Gulfport in 1955, which remained in operation for 65 years until his retirement in 2020. During those 65 years in business, his late son Daniel Triplet Day joined him in the family business in 1987, while his daughter Poem Love worked alongside her father and brother running the lunch counter and retail part of the business.

Jim was always willing to lend a helping hand for all his patients and customers, whether it be providing medicines during times of disaster, opening the store after hours to fill much-needed prescriptions, and if asked, he dispensed compassionate and sound advice.

He led by example and instilled a strong work ethic and the value of family, honesty, friendships and loyalty to his children, who have now passed that testament to his amazing character, down to his dear grandchildren who referred to him as “Popa”.  Mr. and Mrs. Day’s home was always filled with kids, teenagers, and young adults who regarded them as second parents. Jim and Joan’s home was always open to any of their children’s friends who needed a place to go.

In his younger years, Jim enjoyed flying his airplane, fishing, and watching his children compete in water sports. Like many men of his generation, he was a man of few words, but when he did speak, it was sage-like advice, hysterically funny, and always to the point.

He was a member of the Gulfport Yacht Club, Ole Miss Alumni Association, the Mississippi Pharmacy Association, the Mississippi Independent Pharmacy Association, and Mississippi City United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Camille McClintock Day and Samuel Kirby Day; son, Daniel Triplett Day; and his siblings, Dorothy "Dot" Johnson, Dr. Samuel Kirby Day, and William M. "Bill" Day.

Mr. Day is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan McCabe Day; children, Steven H. Day (Kathy), Samuel B. Day (Kim), and Poem Day Love (Rance); grandchildren, Hunter M. Day (Maggie), Keaton J. Day, Ashton T. Johnson, Samuel B. “Brock” Day, Jr., Forrest W. Day, Randall A. Love (Jamie), and Janin Keating (Dennis); great grandchildren, Merritt K. Day, Breton S.
