James O. Burke

James O. Burke, Jr., born on a farm in Rixeyville, VA in 1921, passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2013, in Biloxi, MS at Keesler Air Force Base.
Mr. Burke graduated from Culpepper High School in Virginia and joined the Army Air Corp in October 1942. He was stationed in Rattlesdin, England and served in the 8th Air Force, 447th Bomber Group, 45th Wing, 3rd Division, where he flew 30 missions over Germany as a right waist gunner and radio man. He also flew 2 missions over Normandy, France on D-Day. During his service, among other awards, he received a Purple Heart and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Over his 21 year career, he served in England, Germany, France, and on numerous U.S. bases.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James O. Burke, Sr. and Katherine Sheads Burke, and a child, Aimee.
He is survived by his family: wife of 67 years, Myrtle S. Burke; Sandra Weeks (and William), Clifford Burke (and Ava), James Burke (and Marsha), Abbe Fannan (and Jon), David Burke, Danielle and Corrie Burke, Sean Burke, and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2013, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, from 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 26, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Gulfport, at 11:30 a.m.
Burial will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Air Force.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the VFW or the DAV.
