Imogene Pickett Hoffmann, a beloved educator and devoted member of her community, passed away on October 2, 2025, at the age of 90.
A native of Utica, Mississippi, and long-time resident of south Mississippi, Imogene dedicated her life to education and service. She held degrees in Elementary Education from Mississippi State University (MSU) and the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), as well as an associate’s degree from Hinds Junior College. Over her 24-year teaching career, she taught in public schools across Mississippi, including Jackson, Columbia, Vicksburg, Long Beach, Mount Olive, Meridian, and Union.
Imogene was honored to be elected to Phi Theta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi, and Delta Kappa Gamma, reflecting her commitment to excellence in education.
She was a gifted singer and joyously shared her talents through many church and community projects. She selflessly served others and delighted in her family—whether through cooking, baking, or gardening her warmth brought joy and peace to many.
A lifelong disciple of Christ and devoted member of the United Methodist Church, Imogene was also active in professional organizations such as the Mississippi Professional Educators, the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics, and the Mississippi Council for Teachers of Mathematics.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Cascille Pickett; her husband, Robert Huffman; her son, Steven Huffman; her brother, Melvin Pickett; and her sisters, Joyce Pickett and Lorraine Waltman, and brothers-in-law WC Alderman, Frank Alderman, and Gerald Huffman.
She is survived by her devoted husband, James Robert Hoffmann, of 15 years; children, Mike Huffman (Linda), David Huffman (Amanda), Marsha Bishop (Kevin), Amy Duda (Andy), Donna Scharman (Karl), Lori Coverick (Paul), and Heidi Jorgenson (Craig); siblings, Dorothy Alderman, Mary Greer (Monette), and Sue Summers (Ron); grandchildren, Hanna McCoy, Kellie Orr, Jeremy Huffman, Jessica Huffman, Julia Huffman, Sarah Jane Bishop, Andrew Bishop, Ella Bishop, Samantha Traske, Danny Duda, Rachel Caver, Steven Coverick, Stephanie Sellers, Austin Scharman, Kaleb Scharman, Erik Jorgenson, and Hayden Jorgenson; great-grandchildren, Karlie McCoy, Ethan McCoy, Cooper McCoy, Aiden Baughman, Abbie Baughman, Adalynn Orr, Macy Huffman, William Coverick, Matthew Coverick, Annie Coverick, Riley Sellers, Jude Sellers, and Anna Claire Caver. She also leaves behind many other loving family members including Hubert and Betty Joyce Bowman and Jo Ann Huffman.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 6, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., at First Methodist Church Long Beach. The funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Following the service, there will be a luncheon gathering for family and friends.
On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, a graveside service will take place at 11:00 a.m. at Highland Cemetery in Hattiesburg.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many special caregivers who loved and cared for Imogene during her final years. Their joyful kindness brought great peace to her and her family.
