Howard F. McNeill, Sr., age 79, passed away peacefully with his family present on Sunday, January 5, 2014.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Wiley McNeill and Lucy Brady Rogers; his brothers, John Patton McNeill, William W. McNeill, George McNeill, and Dewaine Edwards McNeill; sisters, Nell Wills Murray, Edna Wills, Melaine Yarber, Mary Palmer and Dorothy Hall.
Mr. McNeill is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Sylvia McNeill; five children, Howard (Diana) McNeill, Jr., Margaret Harvey, Kathryn (Ronald) Davis, John Q. McNeill and William W. McNeill II; nine grandchildren, Genevieve M. (Jimmy) Borendame, Stephanie A. McNeill, Stephen L. Harvey, II, Joshua C. McNeill, William A. (Atalie) Sexton, Kyle I. Davis, Marina S. Davis, Allison H. McNeill, Haley M. Thomas, William B. Woodcock; three great grandchildren, Lynden and Rocco Borendame and Ava Sexton. He is also survived by one brother James McNeil.
Howard was a proud graduate of Gulfport High School as a 4 sport Commodore letterman. He played for legendary coaches, Roland Dale, Frank Young and Lindy Callahan as an ""All Big 8 runningback"". He attended MS Gulf Coast Community College and the University of Wyoming; he was honorably discharged from the MS National Guard. After working in Jackson, MS as a salesman both for MS School Supply and The Office Supply Co., he then became owner/operator of American Oil Co. (Bayou View Amaco). He then retired from International Longshoreman 795/1303.
Mr. McNeill was an avid fisherman and a master gardener. He was an ASA/USSSA umpire for 30+ years and donated time to numerous charities.
On August 28, 1928 was name the Howard F. McNeill, Sr. Day by proclamation form Gulfport Mayor Bob Short.
There will be a visitation on Friday, January 10, 2014 at St. John Catholic Church in Gulfport, MS from 10:00am until 11:00am, with a mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am.
