Retired Lt. Colonel Homer Thomas ""Tom"" Montgomery, 98, of Gulfport, passed away on Sunday, July 13th, 2014.
Col. Montgomery was born in 1916 to Virgie and Richard Montgomery in Greenville, Mississippi.
Col. Montgomery was a senior aviator pilot with the United States Army for 23 years. He served in the Korean War as a senior parachutist and flew helicopters to retrieve wounded soldiers. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the 1st Oak Leaf Cluster to Army Commendation Medal, among several others.
Upon his retirement, he transitioned into a civilian role where he worked as a consultant with US Army for 20 years.
Col. Montgomery and his wife moved to Diamondhead, MS in 1984. He quickly found a position as a property manager where he worked until he was 89. He served as president of the Diamondhead Homeowners Association and was a member of the Krewe of Diamondhead. Until just five years ago, he traveled the country to attend each annual meeting of the 82nd Airborne Division Association. He was also an active Veterans of Foreign Wars member.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Louise Montgomery; his mother, Virgie Montgomery; his father, Richard Montgomery; and six brothers and sisters.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Cookie Logan (Dennis); his granddaughters, Ashley Blomeyer (Dustin), Whitney Hubbard (Edward) and Blakely Logan; and his great-grandsons, Logan Blomeyer, Hutchins Blomeyer, Whitaker Blomeyer and Gates Blomeyer, all of Birmingham, AL.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Biloxi National Cemetery.
