Hilda May Rhyne Addison, age 84, of Gulfport, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2015.
Hilda May Rhyne was the youngest of five children born to Philip and Mattie Rhyne in Kissimmee, Florida. She attended Osceola High School where she was voted Most Athletic. While in high school she had a fleeting part-time job as a waitress that ended when she threw a glass of ice water in the face of a customer who got a little too fresh. Before graduating with honors, the feisty beauty attracted the attention of Edward James Addison, a handsome 21-year-old sailor recently home from the war. A short time later, at age 17, Hilda eloped with Ed and the two of them were married just over the Florida state line in Georgia.
She and Ed lived in Kissimmee, Tampa, West Palm Beach and Orlando where she supported him in the successful insurance career that eventually led them to Gulfport, Mississippi. They went on trips to Madrid, Paris, Acapulco, Honolulu and the Bahamas as well as taking numerous road trips across the country and into Canada. Until her children were in school, she also enjoyed hunting with Ed in Wyoming. Except for a brief career at the Sun Herald where she made many friends, she spent most of her life creating a welcoming home for her family. Although loving and supportive to the end with a teasing sense of humor, she was always a force to be reckoned with as her children and grandchildren can testify. She was an avid bowler, a ruthless Scrabble competitor, an accomplished seamstress, a talented artist, a complaining but loyal Atlanta Braves fan, and most of all, an incredible daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She and Ed remained devoted to each other for over 65 years until his death a little over a year ago.
Hilda was predeceased by her mother and father; her brother, Dean; and her sisters, Ada, Augusta, and Aline.
She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Pidek, who inherited her talent for art and love of road trips; her son, Jimmy Addison, who inherited her athletic prowess and stubborn streak; her son-in-law, Gordon Pidek; her daughter-in-law, Donna Addison; her former son-in-law, Gene Reno, all of whom she loved and treated like her own (which could be good and could be bad but was always a privilege!); her cherished grandchildren, Chesa Lane Reno, Jordan Riley Addison, Greyson Brooks Reno, and Taylor Rae (Adam) Mitchell; and devoted nurses, Arlene Hughes and Togola Hopson.
Memorial Contributions may be made in Hilda's honor to the South Mississippi Humane Society, 2615 25th Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39501, www.hssm.org.
