He was a World War II veteran and proudly served in the U.S. Navy as a radio telegrapher stationed in the Azores. He loved baseball and as a Freshman at Mississippi State University played First Base and dreamed of playing professional baseball until injuries prevented further play. Herman's life consisted of living every day for his family and friends. He worked hard all his life retiring from the L&N Railroad in 1985 as a telegraph operator. He loved being outdoors, riding his tractor and managed to run a full-time farm. He also found time to coach Pony League and Little League baseball teams after driving from work in East New Orleans each day.

He was an avid quail hunter in his younger years and enjoyed hunting even on the coldest of mornings. He developed a love of golf in his early years by working as a caddy at the one-time beautiful Pine Hills Hotel located on the north shore of Bay St. Louis. In his later years he took up golf playing as often as time permitted.
