Herman L. Gwaltney, Jr., age 78, of Highland, CA, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, in Biloxi, MS.
Herman enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired as a Chief Master Sergeant after 30 years of service. He served as a flight engineer during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and accumulated over 15,000 flight hours.
Herman was an active member of the San Bernardino Elks Lodge and RV Club. He enjoyed traveling, camping, golf, playing bones, and the company of his good friends. A natural leader, his constant smile and sense of humor always inspired those around him.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marcia Mary Gwaltney; his sons, Daryl Gwaltney (Nancy) and Barry Gwaltney (Gina); his daughters, Collette Poppendieck (Steve) and Kathleen Mckeen (Scott); his grandchildren, Maddison and Makenzy Mckeen, Nicole, Danielle, David, and Elizabeth Gwaltney.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 22, 2013, at Biloxi National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., with full military honors rendered by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard from Keesler AFB.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the American Heart Association, www.heart.org.
