Helena O. Nichols, a beloved mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2025, in Gulfport, Mississippi. Born on September 19, 1949, in Laconia, New Hampshire, Helena lived a life filled with dedication, warmth, and a love for nurturing others.
Helena was a woman of remarkable talents and accomplishments. She pursued her education with passion, acquiring an associate’s degree in cosmetology. However, her heart truly lay in the realm of education and caregiving. For nearly 30 years, she served as a cafeteria lady, after-school teacher, and summer camp program worker, positively impacting the lives of countless children at St. John Elementary, 28th Street Elementary, and Bayou View Elementary. Her commitment to their growth and well-being showcased her deep-rooted belief in the value of teaching and caring for children.
A devoted parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Helena took great pride in her faith and the community she cherished. Her spirituality and dedication to her church were some of her proudest accomplishments, reflecting her compassionate spirit and love for service.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Helena found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She had a deep love for watching Sci-Fi movies, savoring coffee, and engaging in word search puzzles and card games. These hobbies brought her happiness and were often shared with family and friends, creating joyous moments filled with laughter and love.
Helena leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts. She is survived by her daughter, Simone Bernadette Leonard, and her daughter, Stephanie Dawn Marie Elizabeth (Nicholas) Hicks, as well as her son, Steven Anthony Wayne Nichols. She is also survived by her sister Elizabeth Martin and sister Kathleen Griego. Helena took immense pride in her role as a grandmother to Bryce Carroll Kriner and Gwenevere Gale Leonard, finding endless joy in their laughter and growth.
Though Helena is preceded in death by her father, Fredrick Leon Gale, her mother, Constance Marie Gale, and her sister, Donna Marie Carter, their memories live on through the love she instilled in her family and friends.
