Helen Mae Nilges, born on October 31, 1934, in Gulfport, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, in Biloxi, Mississippi. A devoted homemaker and cherished member of the community, she leaves behind a legacy of love that resonates deeply within her family and friends.
Helen graduated from Woolmarket High School, where she began her lifelong journey of nurturing and caring for those around her. She found great joy in her role as a mother to her eight children: Charles and Sharon Nilges of Biloxi, MS; Brenda and Ronnie Spence of Frostproof, FL; Joseph Nilges of Gulfport, MS; Theresa and Scott Hopper of Cordova, TN; Robert Nilges of Gulfport, MS; Ms. Betty Nilges of Gulfport, MS; Mary Ann and Mike Foster of Gulfport, MS; and David Nilges of Gulfport, MS. Her love extended further through her grandchildren, Michael, Jessica, Megan, Justin, Whitney, Ann, Amy, Chris, Corey, and Cody, as well as twelve treasured great-grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles L. Nilges Sr., and her parents, Joseph Warren Hackett and Mary Louise Hackett. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her, but her spirit will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.
Helen's passions were many, and she found particular delight in the Mardi Gras season, showcasing her vibrant spirit. She was proud to be a member of the Krewe of Gemini, reflecting her enthusiasm for life and connection with others. She was an active participant in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Dart Association Bronze Division and also contributed to her local community by being involved in the American Legion Post 119.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Jaime Bohlen for the personal care extended to Helen during her later years, as well as to St. Joseph Hospice for their compassionate support.
She leaves a remarkable mark on those fortunate enough to cross her path, and her legacy of kindness and devotion will be cherished forever.
The family asks to please consider any memorial contributions made to South Mississippi Humane Society.
