Harvey Samuel ""Duffy"" Stanley, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of September 16, 2015 at the age of 90. Prior to his death, he was able to spend quality time with his family and expressed how happy he was with his family and his life.
Duffy was born in the delta of Greenville, Mississippi where he graduated from Greenville High School. He was proud to be an American and enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943 to serve our nation during World War II.
After the war, he attended Ole Miss where he met Virgile Clemence ""Vegi"" Dick who became his wife in 1949. It was at Ole Miss that he got the nickname ""Duffy"". They had one phone on the floor of their dormitory and he would answer it ""Duffy's Tavern."" He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.
During their early years of marriage, they lived in four states and managed to have a child in almost everyone. Jan, their eldest daughter was born in Georgia, Cindy in Texas and Gay and Trey in Louisiana. In 1957, they moved to Gulfport and settled there with their family.
After Ole Miss, he worked at Billups Petroleum Company. Later, he served the Department of Justice as a Bankruptcy Trustee for the Southern District of Mississippi until 2003 when he retired at the age of 79.
He was an avid hunter. He started hunting with his Daddy when he was 8 years old. They hunted squirrel, rabbits and dove. As an adult, he never missed a hunting or fishing season. He and Vegi traveled around the world exploring new places and cultures. He also enjoyed wood working, a skilled acquired from his Father.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Gulfport Yacht Club and the Pass Christian Investor Club.
Survivors include his wife and his four children Janis Stanley Anderson (Tom), Cynthia Stanley Johnson, Gay Stanley Mayeux and Harvey Samuel ""Trey"" Stanley, III (Kitty); his five grandchildren, Fortune Jaubert ""Bear"" Alexander (Annette), Ira Eugene Gaddy, IV (Jocy), Jessica Stanley Ross (Joel), Jayme Lynn Stanley and Leslie Clemence Mayeux; his two great grandchildren Gabriella Grace Alexander and Joel Thomas Ross, Jr. and his brother Wade Hampton Stanley and his wife Betty. He was preceded in death by his parents Harvey Samuel Stanley and Tessie Stanley and his grandson Harvey Samuel ""Sam"" Stanley, IV.
The family is so very grateful for the loving care our Father received at Boyington Nursing Center and especially Memorial Hospital at Gulfport and Canon Hospice.
There will be a celebration of his life at Trinity United Methodist Church at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 26, 2015. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until service time. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donation to Trinity United Methodist Church at 5007 Lawson Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39507.
