Harry “Chip” Anton Speaker, III, age 79, died at his home in Long Beach, Mississippi on February 9, 2023. He was born on December 8, 1943, in Birmingham, Alabama.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jamie Burk Speaker; his parents, Elizabeth and Harry Speaker; and grandchildren, Margaret Scott McCormick and John Robert McCormick.
Chip is survived by daughter, Elizabeth "Sugar" S. McCormick, and her husband Dr. J. Beaux McCormick, Sr. of Gulfport; son, H. Anton Speaker, IV; and his three grandchildren, Katherine E. McCormick, Johnathon B. McCormick, Jr., and Harry A. Speaker, V.
Mr. Speaker was a graduate of University of Southern Mississippi where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He was retired from Mississippi Power Company. He was the Past Commodore of the Gulfport Yacht Club. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Gulfport, the Kiwanis Club of Gulfport, Les Cavaliers Mardi Gras Association, and was a past board member of the Humane Society of South Mississippi. He served as a Captain in the United States Army, was an instructor in the U. S. Ranger School, served in both the 82nd and the 101st Airborne Divisions, and completed two tours in Vietnam. He earned the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, a Parachutist Badge, the Air Medal, Vietnamese Ranger Badge, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Visitation will be held at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, on Monday, February 13, from 5-7 pm. Burial will take place at Pine Rest Cemetery in Foley, Alabama on Tuesday, February 14 at 10:00am.
