Harrison Clarence Speck, 94, of Gulfport, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2015. He was born on January 30, 1921 in Lexington, NE to Eugene and Lulu Dillman Speck. He married Florence Arlene Hendrickson on February 4, 1942 and joined the Army Air Corps later that year. He served in New Guinea (Pacific Theater) and then deployed to Japan in 1945 as part of the Occupation of Japan. Upon his discharge in December 1946, he returned to Kearney. He went to work for General Telephone & Electric (GT&E) and retired with 40 years of service. In 1994 they moved to Gulfport, MS to be closer to family.
He was a member of VFW Post 759, Elks Lodge #984, a Master Mason with the Rob Morris Masonic Lodge, #46, and a long-time member of the First Christian Church, all of Kearney. He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 119, in Gulfport. He was an avid reader, enjoyed golf, working in his yard, travel and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene; brothers, Carl, Don, Harry and James; sisters, Alice Gallagher and Angie Clough; and grandson, Randall Speck. He is survived by his children, Diana (Ray) Weaver, Richard (Carol) Speck, all of Gulfport and Cathy (Doug) Johnson of Gainesville, VA. Also to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Wendy (Rob) Teague of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA; Brian (Stephanie) Weaver of San Diego, CA; Allison (Jason) Walker of Brandon, MS; Erin (Mike) Schmid of Arlington, VA and Brianna Johnson of Washington, DC. His is also survived by four great grandchildren, Sean Teague, Nicholas Teague, Azlyn Walker and Atley Walker.
A memorial service will be held at the First Christian Church in Kearney on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at 10 a.m. followed by internment at the Kearney Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorial donations be made to the Randall Speck Pediatric Special Needs Fund, Memorial Hospital Foundation, P. O. Box 940, Gulfport, MS 39502.
