Gladys Murray McCook, a beloved member of her community and an accomplished watercolor artist, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, in Diamondhead, Mississippi. She was born on July 7, 1936, in Jessup, Georgia, where she first developed her passion for nature and art, later reflecting her love of realistic floral and bird subjects in her exquisite paintings.
Throughout her life, Gladys lived with purpose and embraced the joys of her interests. Known for her vibrant and serene artworks, she became a well-respected artist, selling her paintings across the Southeast. Her artistic talents were matched by her adventurous spirit; she cherished deep sea fishing expeditions alongside her husband, George McCook, and enjoyed extensive travels throughout Europe and the United States.
A pillar in her community, Gladys was the proud recipient of accolades, including her role as the Queen of the Sea for the Krewe of Kama'Aina. She and her husband, George, were among the first residents of Diamondhead, where they played instrumental roles in cultivating a sense of community and hospitality. Gladys was also a founding member of the Diamondhead Methodist Church, contributing significantly to the church’s establishment and growth.
Gladys is survived by her loving daughters, Cheri Ladner (Steve) and Lisa Michelle McCook; her sister, Jean Dufel; her grandchildren, Matthew Ladner, Paul "P.J." Ladner, and George McCook Hulbert; as well as her great-grandchild, Maxwell Ladner.
She was preceded in death by her cherished husband of 60 years, George McCook; her parents, Jesse Walter and Eva Murray; and her sisters, Jessie, Doris, Burma, Hilda, and Sue.
Gladys will be remembered for her kindness, artistic spirit, and commitment to her family and community. Visitation will be held on October 7, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM, followed by a memorial service at 12:30 PM. Both services will take place at Riemann Family Funeral Home in Pass Christian, Mississippi. A graveside service will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery at 2:30 PM.
