Gertrude Allen

Gertrude Bond Allen peacefully passed from this life on October 5, 2018 while attended by her loving family; she was 97 years old.
She was born on September 22, 1921 to Mary Ellen Williams Bond, and Lazarus S. Bond in Harrison County, Mississippi. She was married to Douglas Allen from 1939 until his death in 1991. Her brothers Metro, Esco, Forbus, Wilton, and sisters Ida Meryl Schonewitz, Mary Compston, and Helen Maples, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by one brother, Ronald Lazarus Bond; two sons, Douglas Allen, Jr. of Charleston, SC, and Gary K. Allen of Columbia, MO; 4 grandchildren (Mark Wilson Allen, Kelsey Wilson Allen Hardy, Haley Virginia Allen, Julia Alice Allen); and 1 great grandchild (Lyla Grace Allen).
Gertrude was an anchor of strength, faith, steadfastness, and selflessness to all of her family and all those fortunate enough to have known her.  As a long-standing member of Handsboro Baptist Church, she supervised the nursery for many years.
Gertrude graduated from Success High School and Carr Secretarial School in Gulfport.   As a woman of the early through mid to late 1900's, she demonstrated a will and a voice that provided quiet but firm leadership for her immediate and extended family, her church and her larger community. She was a blessing to all who knew her.
A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 8, 2018, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS.  Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, October 9 at Handsboro Baptist Church, 1421 E. Pass Road, Gulfport MS, where friends may visit one hour prior.
Graveside services and interment will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, 8910 Carl Leggett Road, Gulfport.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to youth ministries, to be specified and overseen by the Deacons of Handsboro Baptist Church.
