George Truesdale McCook, age 82, resident of Diamondhead, died peacefully on Thursday, December 3, 2015.
George leaves his wife of 60 years, Gladys (Murray) McCook; his daughters, Cheri McCook Ladner and her husband Steve of Diamondhead; Shelly McCook and her husband Richard Weaver of Kennesaw, Ga; his grandsons, Matthew Ladner (Angela) of Memphis, TN, George Hulbert of Durham, NC and Paul Ladner of Hattiesburg, MS; and his great grandson, Maxwell Ladner.
He was born in Sumter, South Carolina on November 3, 1933, to Rev. Samuel McCook and Annell Moseley McCook and was preceded in death by his parents. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn McCook Reed, and his brother, Samuel Alexander McCook, Jr.
At a young age, George became an avid fisherman and golfer. He enjoyed these sports throughout his life. He served his country throughout the Korean Conflict as a proud member of the Military Police, 2nd Infantry Division, U.S. Army. He met his wife, Gladys Murray McCook upon his return to Ft. Sill and they were married in Lawton, Oklahoma by George's father in 1955. George returned to college at Samford University in Birmingham, AL. He formerly worked as a Division Manager for Sears, Division Sales Manager for Encyclopedia Britannica, and then became a Realtor and Broker in multiple states. George retired after many years as the Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Diamondhead Corporation. He not only took pride in his business and watching Diamondhead grow from a land development into a community and city, but truly relished the friends he made during his time in business.
Over the years, he established a reputation as an exceptional Gulf Coast fisherman and avid golfer. He enjoyed his boat, the Beachcomber, and fishing with Gladys from the Chandeleur Islands to streams in Alaska. He was a longtime member of Diamondhead Country Club. He was a founding member of Diamondhead United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at the Diamondhead United Methodist Church with a visitation for family and friends beginning one hour prior to the service.
