Geneva T. "Jean" Box, age 82, of Gulfport, went to her heavenly home on August 27, 2017. She passed away peacefully with her family by her side.
Jean was born to Frank and Yvonne Bell in Caswell, Maine. She graduated from John Bapst High School and attended Husson College in Bangor, Maine. She married Air Force TSgt Elfred Wayne Box and they had 4 children. Jean lived up and down the east coast finally settling in Gulfport in 1974. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Bunny Isgett-Lynn (Danny) and son, Bruce Box (Babs) residents of Gulfport. She was a loving grandmother to all of her grandchildren, Kelley Hartfield, Liz Wells, Shane Isgett, Bradley Box, Brandon Box, Rhett Box, and Candace Box. Jean was equally blessed with 5 great-grandkids, Mason Hartfield, Zonia Isgett, Hadley Isgett, JayCee and Kameron Wells; along with multiple nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 42 years, Wayne Box; a daughter, Gail Box; a son, Allen Box; and Jean was the youngest of 7 children and was preceded in death by her three brothers and four sisters.
Jean's greatest passion was serving her community and becoming the best Republican ever! She was a member of the Women's Republican Party where her volunteer work impacted many elected officials. Jean served as president of the Harrison County Republican Women's Club for two terms, as well as multiple officer positions throughout the years. She received many awards during her tenure and received the Highest Award from the Mississippi Federation of Republican Women and the National Federation of Republican Women. In 2002, 2006, and 2008, Jean was awarded the Women of Tribute by the Mississippi Federation of Republican Women and was elected unanimously as the Fourth Congressional District Director for the organization. She served on the Harrison County Executive Committee for 7 years, representing District Four, coordinating precincts, hiring poll workers, and helping certify election results for the primary elections. Jean was also Vice President of the Harrison County Republican Club and was the first female to be elected President, and then also served a second term.
Among Jean's civic contributions, she served on the advisory board of the Humane Society of South Mississippi. She was a board member of the Orange Grove Chamber of Commerce for 2 terms. She received the Citizen of the Quarter award. Jean was the treasurer for the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra Guild for 2 years. Jean was the Municipal Election Commissioner for the Gulfport Primary Elections and co-chaired the 2002 Gulfport Redistricting. As a board member of the Orange Grove Rotary, she received several awards including Rotarian of the Year and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellow for service above self. Jean was a past member of the Beach Combers Red Hat Society, Make A Wish Foundation, March of Dimes, American Business Women's Association, Metropolitan Dinner Club, Center Stage, and Gulfport Little Theater.
The Box family wishes to thank the caring staff of Gulfport Care Center. She was surrounded by love extended by all of the staff, from the housekeepers, laundry workers, nursing assistants, nursing staff, administration, social workers, recreation staff and even maintenance! I bet on any given day, mom had 30-40 kisses and hugs! We also wish to extend our deepest thanks for the care provided by Kindred Hospice. We find comfort knowing that she is now reunited with her husband and children, as well as her mom and dad!
The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, September 1, 2017, at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, with visitation from 10 - 11 am. The service will be officiated by Dr. Rene Freret and Pastor Dan Carr. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
