Gene Paul Hidalgo

November 6, 1944 — December 17, 2023

Bay St. Louis

We regretfully announce the passing of Gene Hidalgo, who after a brave battle with cancer, departed from this life surrounded by those he loved dearly. Born in Marrero, New Orleans, Gene's life was one of valor and adventure, imbibed with the rich cultural tapestry of his hometown.

Gene answered the call of duty as a young man, joining the army and in doing so, embarking on a journey that would take him around the globe. His travels imprinted upon him a worldly perspective that he carried throughout his life. Upon his return, he lived in a variety of cities, finding joy and leaving an indelible mark on New Orleans, San Francisco, Chicago, Orlando, and finally, in the tranquil surroundings of Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi.

A man of convivial spirit and generosity, Gene was the heart of every gathering and the steadfast friend in every circle. His laughter was contagious, his presence a comfort, and his absence is a void that will be deeply felt by many, particularly in the Bay Saint Louis community which he so dearly loved.

Gene was preceded in death by his devoted parents, and his partner, Warren, who were undoubtedly there to welcome him with open arms. He is survived by his brother Rene, his sister Elsie, his adoring nieces and a community of friends who mourn the loss of such a luminous soul.

Gene, a lifelong art collector, had a keen eye for beauty and an even greater heart for sharing it. In his final act of generosity, an auction of his well-curated collection will be held, with all proceeds benefiting the local Arts in Bay Saint Louis, fulfilling one of his earnest wishes.
