Gary F. Potter, age 74, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family on July 3, 2026. He was born on May 31, 1952, in Watertown, Wisconsin, to Lawrence Potter and Aletha Wilson.
Gary proudly served his country in the United States Army for 20 years, retiring as a SFC after serving as a respected Drill Sergeant. His years of military service reflected his unwavering dedication, discipline, and love for his country.
Following his retirement from the Army, Gary made Lyman, Mississippi, his forever home. He continued his career in public service with the Harrison County Beach Department, where he faithfully served for 30 years. Through hard work, determination, and an exceptional mechanical aptitude, Gary worked his way into the Maintenance Department as a mechanic. He was known for his strong work ethic, willingness to help others, and ability to fix just about anything.
Above all else, Gary was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Martha Potter, of Lyman, Mississippi; his daughters, Laura Potter and Melissa Peterson, both of Lyman, Mississippi and Sue Cassio of Valencia, California; his son, Walter “Lee” Hight (Sheree) of Lyman, Mississippi; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; his sisters, Joyce (Potter) Whiting and Teresa (Potter) Barker of Wisconsin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives he touched.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Potter and Aletha Wilson; his sister, Anita Duessler; his beloved grandson, Rockie Lee Brandon Hight; his nephew, Douglas Duessler; and his father- and mother-in-law, J.L. and Betty Dedeaux.
Gary will be remembered for his quiet strength, steadfast character, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to his family. Whether serving his country, repairing equipment, or lending a helping hand to a neighbor, Gary lived a life defined by honor, humility, and service. His legacy will live on in the family he cherished and the countless lives he impacted through his kindness, wisdom, and example.
Visitation will be held at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, from 12:00PM until service time at 2:00PM.
Funeral services will be held at Reimann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 2:00PM Interment will follow at Finley Cemetery.
