Fred D. Nix, Jr. went to be with Jesus and his heavenly Father, Sunday, January 29, 2012. He fought the battle of living with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis for 2 years.
Fred was born in Meridian, MS February 8, 1949. Since his father was in the Air Force he grew up living all over the US, as well as Taiwan and Scotland. He graduated from Long Beach High School in 1967 before going active in the United States Navy, where he served 26 years. He, his wife, and children returned to Long Beach in 1983 where they lived for 23 years.
After retiring from the Navy in 1996, he had various jobs including 3 years as in-house probation officer with the Court Program. His last employment was a Baptist missionary organization, and he and his wife served in India 3 ½ years until he was diagnosed with A.L.S.
Fred was loved by all who met him and was known for his big smiles and big hugs. He loved the Lord, his family, and friends and was faithful to tell them he loved them.
He was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Gulfport, where he served as Deacon, Choir Member, Greeter, and Sunday School Teacher. He loved worshipping at FBC Gulfport and sharing with many how Jesus gave him hope and strength.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred Nix, Sr., Juanita Harper, and stepfather, Rosco Harper.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Lydia Nix of Gulfport; son, Fred Nix III (Davie) of Gulfport; daughter, Melanie Nix of Slidell, LA; grandson, Fred Nix IV of Gautier; sister, Sharon Nix of Woolmarket; brother, Jim Nix (Rosie) of Pass Christian; and many nieces and nephews.
The visitation will be from 10:00 to 11:00 am, Thursday, February 2, 2012 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport. The Funeral Service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 am. Burial with Military Honors will be held following the funeral at Biloxi National Cemetery at 12:30 pm.
