Frazer Lea Rice, Jr., age 96, of Pass Christian, Mississippi, husband of the late Baird Dantzler Rice, passed away on December 4, 2013.
Frazer was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 18, 1917 and resided there until he and Baird moved to Pass Christian in 1993. He was an avid sailor and joined the Coast Guard in 1941 shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As part of the Corsair Fleet, he was a member of the crew of the Schooner Alvee out of Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. The Alvee and other large yachts patrolled, under sail, for submarines off the East Coast of the United States. Following the end of WWII, Frazer attended Tulane University on the G.I. Bill, graduating with a B.A. in literature. He loved Shakespeare and the poems of Robert Service. Frazer turned his love of sailing into a yacht delivery service and also served as navigator in many races, including the Regata del Sol al Sol, Sardinia Cup, RORC Admiral's Cup, and the International Rolex Regatta in the West Indies. Later in life, he and Baird traveled extensively, and he spent many summers at the Wooden Boat School in Brooklin, Maine. Frazer was a member of the Southern Yacht Club, The Boston Club and the Pass Christian Yacht Club.
Frazer is survived by his children, Frazer L. Rice, III (Beverly), Donna Rice and Nemours Rice, and his grandson, Zachary Rice Tuller. He will be greatly missed by his family and close friends.
A memorial service and gathering of family and friends will take place on January 4, 2014 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the family home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pass Christian Friends of the Library at 111 Hiern Avenue, Pass Christian, Mississippi 39571.
