Firmin “Fred” Charles Ashmus, age 84 of Biloxi, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Louise Ashmus; his wife, Marilyn Ashmus; his daughter, Michelle Nickel and his brother, Frank Ashmus.

Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Fred moved to California at the age of 18, where he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served his country with honor and distinction for 20 years before retiring from military service. A true patriot, Fred's love for his country never wavered. He proudly served during the Vietnam War, demonstrating unwavering courage, duty, and sacrifice. His military service reflected the values he held dear, and his devotion to America remained a defining part of his character throughout his life.
Fred approached every day with optimism, gratitude, and a determination to live life to the fullest. No matter the circumstances, he rarely complained and always chose to focus on the positive. If Fred called you a friend, you had a loyal friend for life. He was someone you could always count on to listen without judgment, offer wise advice, share an adventure, or patiently teach a new skill.
An avid fisherman, Fred found peace on the water and joy in sharing his passion with others. He was also a dedicated volunteer at the Biloxi VA Medical Center, where he continued his lifelong commitment to serving his fellow veterans. Above all, Fred cherished his family, his friends, and the life he was blessed to live. Of all of the roles he held in life, being known as Pops was one he treasured most. He was a wonderful Pops whose unconditional love and joyful spirit created memories that his family will carry with them forever.
Fred was a proud Gold Legacy Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6731, Oswald L. Fayard, in D'Iberville. He was also a devoted member of the Military Order of the Cootie and was also a member of the American Legion, and the National Rifle Association. His commitment to these organizations reflected his enduring dedication to his fellow veterans, his community, and the principles he believed in.
He will be sadly missed by Ms. Betty, family, many friends and Bella. “And we love you more!”
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Encompass Rehabilitation, Slidell Memorial Hospital and the Biloxi VA Hospital for their compassionate care.
His duty is complete, his watch has ended, and his legacy of life, love and service will live on in all who knew him. Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord. – Gospel of Matthew
