Fernand William "Billy" Sanchez lived a blessed life from 1934 through January 10, 2018.
He was well respected as a ship captain for over 60 years and in 2013 proudly received the 13th renewal of his any oceans license. Billy was born in New Orleans and traveled throughout the world. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and Harley racer in his youth. He was a certified single engine pilot and enjoyed his time in the air. Billy was fortunate to have ridden a race car on the track at the Indianapolis Speedway where he attained speeds up to 165 mph. He loved playing chess, pool and golf (attaining a hole in one during a tournament in 2005).
Billy met his wife, Helen, in Rhode Island in 1976 and after working in Louisiana for most of his life, he moved to Massachusetts and then Rhode Island where they resided for 25 blissful years. Two favorite sayings he exemplified were "if you love your job you'll never work a day in your life" and "I never met a potato I didn't like." Billy retired from Boston Harbor Cruises in 2014 at age 80 and relocated close to his southern roots by moving to Mississippi.
Left behind to carry on Billy's legacy are his beloved wife, Helen; two devoted daughters, Marion Miller (Dennis) and Debra Blache (Donald); a loving stepson, Raymond "Randy" Ruggieri (Terri); he is also survived by Johnny Campbell Sanchez (Sheila); two sisters, RaiLynne Jarabica and Karen Lodrigues; a granddaughter, Cassidi Considine (Kyle); 2 grandsons, Danny Ray Carr and Fernand "William" Sanchez, III (Carla); 8 great-grandchildren, Fernand "Wll" Sanchez, IV, Dillon Sanchez, Cooper Carr, Daevin and Noah House; Ethan, Liam, and Micah Considine; as well as nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Fernand William Sanchez and Dorothy Hereford Sanchez, a sister, Dorothy Dale Russell, and a brother, Thomas Sanchez. Billy was an extraordinary husband and father who will be profoundly missed.
Visitation will be on Saturday, January 20, 2018,, from 11 am - 2 pm at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS. A prayer service will be at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel.
