Obituary

Ethelyn Marie Simmons Mozingo, age 103 of Gulfport, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, John “J.C.” Mozingo; her parents, James A. Simmons and Eva Mae Keller Simmons; her son, Lloyd Daniel “Dan” Mozingo; her daughter-in-law, Dianne Carney Mozingo; her siblings, Jamie Simmons, Delma Simmons, Joe Ben Simmons and Dot Nobles; and her brother-in-law, Everett Wright.

Ethelyn is survived by her sons, John Calvin (Linda) Mozingo, Jr. and Dr. Ronald “Ron” C. Mozingo; her grandchildren, John (Mary) Mozingo, III, Angela (Christopher) Murray, Kimberly Dawn Mozingo, Tamara Joy Mozingo, Amanda Leigh Mozingo, Moriah Denise Mozingo and Trent Daniel Mozingo; her great grandchildren, Cody Pettis, Mary Katherine Mozingo, John Mozingo, IV, Megan Murray, Teagan Cosby and Piper Cosby; her siblings, Mildred Wright and David (Bobbie) Simmons and numerous nieces and nephews.

Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, she grew up and was raised in Petal, where she spent her childhood on a farm during the Great Depression. As the oldest of eight children, she learned early the values of hard work, resilience, and family. Despite the challenges of the era, her family never went without food, thanks to their life on the farm.

She graduated from Petal High School in 1940 as part of its very first graduating class, proudly wearing the first dress she had ever sewn herself, a reflection of her lifelong talent and creativity. At the age of 19, she married Mr. John “J.C.” Mozingo, beginning a devoted partnership that would span 69 years.

Over the course of her life, she witnessed remarkable changes in the world from the introduction of early automobiles to the inventions of televisions, microwaves, and air conditioning.

In 1956, she and J.C. moved to the Mississippi Gulf Coast from Vicksburg, MS, where she began her professional career. After a brief time with Sears, she dedicated 25 years to Mississippi Power, where her hard work and commitment were recognized with the Mississippi Power Retiree of the Year Award.

Following her retirement, she continued her lifelong passion for serving others as a volunteer coordinator at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. She devoted more than 4,500 hours of service, a contribution that brought her great joy and fulfillment.

She had a true gift for caring for others, expressed through her love of cooking and sewing for family and friends. She cherished time spent with loved ones and enjoyed the fellowship of her bunco group, where laughter and friendship were always abundant. Ms. Ethelyn was also a talented artist who loved painting.

She will be remembered for her generous heart, her servant’s spirit, and her deep love for family.

Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS, with visitation beginning at 9:00 am in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Gulfport.
