On July 24, 2013, Emma Lou Ryker Miles went to be with her Lord.
To many in the Biloxi Public School District over the last 32 years, she was their elementary music teacher. She taught at Popp's Ferry, Beauvoir, Dukate, Lopez, North Bay, and wherever else they needed her. She was a true lover of friends, music, and people in general. Whether she was teaching voice or piano lessons, she was always a tough-minded optimist in regards to everyone's musical ability... whether they had an ounce of talent of not. Lou Miles touched so many lives both directly and indirectly. She was known as Mama Lou to many neighborhood kids. If someone needed food, she would feed them, if they were already full, she would still try to feed them.
She was the president of the Biloxi Civitan Club, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a member of the Red Hats, on the Gulf Coast Symphony Board, a member of the Community Concerts, sang in the church choir, and rang the hand bells at church as well. In fact, she often over extended herself, much to the family's chagrin. (If you were a member of an organization she was involved in, but not mentioned here, it's because her family couldn't keep up with her.)
Lou Miles was the one who would always smile first. She loved flowers and her little gardens.
She made every holiday special and full of music and warmth.
She went to join her parents: Lt. Col D.W. Ryker and Emma Lou Bass Ryker, and her sister, Elizabeth ""Betty"" Shaw Ryker.
Immediate surviving family includes her husband of 47 years, Edwin U. Miles, daughter, Melody Schobert and her husband, Robert of Bossier, City, LA, and their children Jonathan Schobert, Stephen Schobert of Barstow, CA, and Jason Schobert of Wichita Falls, TX, son, E. Ryker Miles and his wife, Jennifer, and their child Griffin Ryker Miles of Biloxi, MS.
