Elva Calcote Smith

Elva Calcote Smith, 88, went home to be with her Lord on August 5, 2025.

Elva was born on October 14, 1936, in Brookhaven, MS. She was preceded in death by Melvin Smith, her husband of 69 years, her parents Versie and Rutha Posey Calcote and siblings Willena (Housley) Varnado, Mary Lou (Roy) Barlow, Lamar (Irene) Calcote, Loyd (Ann) Calcote, Henry (Thelma) Calcote, and Allen Curry. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Elva is survived by her sons, Mel (Jo Ann) Smith and Mark (Julienne) Smith; grandsons, Tyler (Tara) Smith; grandchildren, Sam and Eloise, Brandon (Lauren) Smith; granddaughters, Francis Elva and Florence; sisters, Bernita (Ronnie) Reeves, Lynette Curry; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Elva loved her Baptist Faith and was a member of First Baptist Church Long Beach, MS for over 50 years.

Elva worked outside of the home as a jewelry salesperson, bank teller, and administrative assistant. She loved her years involved in the space program as a member of the Pan Am team at the Stennis Space Center. Her favorite job was working beside her sons for over 30 years at Smith Tire & Auto Service, Inc. in Long Beach, second only to being Mother to her sons and Nana to her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Makisha Sexton, Olivia Alford and Melissa Dedeaux for their loving care during their time with Elva as she struggled with Parkinson’s Disease.

Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church of Long Beach on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 11 am – 1 pm with service to follow at 1 pm. Interment will be in Gulf Pines Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Long Beach, 300 N. Cleveland Avenue, Long Beach, MS 39560.
