Elizabeth D. "Betty" Strasser

Elizabeth D. "Betty" Strasser, a cherished native of Nashville, Illinois, and a long-time resident of Long Beach, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the age of 104. She was born on January 1, 1921, in Nashville, Illinois, to Samuel and Blanche Day.

Elizabeth's legacy is marked not only by her personal accomplishments but also by her service during World War II. She served in Washington D.C. as part of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which is now known as the CIA. Her diligent work included reading maps and preparing detailed topographical maps of the Normandy Coast prior to the D-Day Invasion, contributing significantly to the war effort. She was part of a select group commissioned to follow behind General Patton to remove evidence of war plans, although personal reasons led her to not participate in that particular mission.

In 1947, Elizabeth married Richard C. Strasser, and together they navigated life as a military family, living in several states during Richard’s distinguished career. She ultimately retired from her role as a Professor of Geography at Trenton State College in New Jersey before settling on the beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1981.

She was accomplished academically, holding a master’s degree in Geography from the University of Illinois. Elizabeth's vibrant personality shone through her many hobbies and interests, including golf, swimming, travel, reading, teaching embroidery, and engaging in social events. While she was an avid learner and a respected educator, her spiritual life was equally important to her. Elizabeth was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, where she found community and solace.

Elizabeth is survived by her two beloved children, David Strasser of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Ann Carosella of Fort Myers, Florida; four grandchildren, Cristina Carosella, Fausto R. Carosella, Todd Strasser, and Tim Strasser; two great-grandchildren, Riley and Liam Strasser; and her nephew, Robert Day Jr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard C. Strasser; her brothers, Robert and William Day; and her parents, Samuel and Blanche Day.

In honoring Elizabeth's remarkable life, her family invites all who knew her to join them at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach, Mississippi, on Monday, July 14, 2025. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. (no visitation beforehand).  The graveside service will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.  Elizabeth D. Strasser will be remembered for her unwavering spirit, dedication to her family, and the profound impact she made throughout her exceptional life.
