On April 11th 2013 Chief Andrews, 88, departed this life to be with his Heavenly Father. He was preceded in death by his, daughter Madeline Andrews, son John Vincent Andrews granddaughter Michelle Andrews, parents Alcess & Madeline Navarre Andrews, brothers Lester, O'neil, & Walter Andrews, sisters Rita Reno, Elvira Callagan, Clara Davis, Edna Hoolahan, Dorothy Emma Cordes, & Annie Ruth Andrews.
He leaves behind his beloved cherished memories and to celebrate his life, his beloved wife of 66 years, Geraldine F. Andrews; son Edward James Andrews Jr. and wife Betty S. Andrews; daughter Bonnie Andrews Valentine and husband Duane Shipp; granddaughter Brandy Goldie and husband Phillip; grandsons Shane Valentine and wife Aimee, Jonathan Valentine, Will Saunders, Brian Shipp and wife Misty, Keith Shipp; 12 great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
Chief Andrews was born in Westwego, LA and was a native of New Orleans. He was in the construction business in Houma, La before moving to Gulfport in 1966 to serve with the US Naval Seabees. Chief Andrews was a WWII, Korean War, and Viet Nam Veteran. He retired from the US Naval Seabees with 41 years of active and reserve service. The Secretary of the Navy presented Chief Andrews the Navy Commendation Medal ""For heroism in rendering first aid and emergency treatment to approximately 17 U. S. Marines whose truck had plunged about 300 to 400 feet down the side of Hill 724 just below Hai Van Pass in the Danang area of South Vietnam on 30 July 1967"". He was a member of the American Legion, Fleet Reserve, & a charter member of VFW Post 4526.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2013, family 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., friends 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS. The Rev. Dr. Guy M. Richard, Minister, of The First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport will hold a service in the funeral home chapel at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 18, 2013. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and family make donations to First Presbyterian Church, 10885 O'neal Road Gulfport, MS 39503, (228) 863-2664.
