Dr. Rachel Eileen "Elaine"
Washington Carpenter
Jun 4, 1955 — Jun 15, 2026
Obsequies of Dr. Rachel Eileen "Elaine" Washington Carpenter
My beloved mother, Dr. Rachel Eileen "Elaine" Washington Carpenter, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2026. Although her education and career took her to other parts of Mississippi, Rachel remained a lifelong resident of Moss Point, always returning to the community she proudly called home.
Rachel was born in Moss Point, MS, on June 4, 1955, to Freddie Washington, Sr. and Alberta Blanks Washington. She was baptized at a young age at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Moss Point, where she remained a member.
Rachel's love for learning began as a student at St. Peter's Catholic School and continued through her graduation from Our Lady of Victory Catholic School in 1973. She went on to earn an Associate of Arts degree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Junior College, Jackson County Campus, in 1975, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from The University of Southern Mississippi in 1976. She later completed a Master of Education, an Educational Specialist degree, and a Doctor of Philosophy, all from The University of Southern Mississippi, as well as advanced certifications in Gifted Education and Educational Administration. A lifelong learner, Rachel believed that knowledge was meant to be shared and devoted her life to helping others discover the power of education.
In 1976, Rachel began her career as a classroom teacher in the Moss Point School District while continuing her graduate studies. Over the next four decades, she served as classroom teacher, adult education teacher, gifted educator, head teacher and director of the Children's Laboratory of Learning at The University of Southern Mississippi, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of the Moss Point School District. Following her retirement from the Moss Point School District in 2007, Rachel continued to invest in education as a school improvement specialist, an educational consultant, and an adjunct professor at The University of Southern Mississippi, where she prepared future educators. Although she achieved many professional milestones, including becoming the first African-American assistant superintendent of the Moss Point School District, Rachel never pursued titles for their own sake. She simply embraced each opportunity as another way to serve children, educators, and her community.
Rachel's influence extended beyond the classroom. She presented at state, regional, national, and international educational conferences, published professional work, and served on numerous educational committees and accreditation teams. She also held leadership roles in organizations including the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Board of Trustees, Jackson County Civic Action, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She was admired for her knowledge, respected for her leadership, and trusted for her unwavering integrity. Throughout Mississippi, educators knew that those taught or mentored by Dr. Rachel Carpenter were well prepared.
Rachel's accomplishments earned admiration, but it was her heart that people remembered most. Nothing brought her greater joy than the love she shared with her family, whose devotion to one another was evident to everyone who knew them. Her beauty was undeniable, but those who knew her were drawn even more to the warmth, kindness, and joy that radiated from within. She filled every room with laughter, lively conversation, and a joyful spirit that drew people to her. She had a remarkable ability to make others feel seen, valued, and genuinely cared for. Whether mentoring a young teacher, encouraging a student, volunteering her time, or simply sharing a laugh, Rachel gave of herself generously. Those fortunate enough to know her will remember not only what she accomplished, but how she made them feel.
She is preceded in death by her father, Freddie Washington, Sr.; mother, Alberta Blanks Washington; paternal grandparents, Alex and Hattie Washington May; maternal grandparents, Rainey and Rachel Blanks; sister, Hattie Margaret Washington Saucier Nettles; brother, Freddie "Brother" Washington, Jr.; husband, Edgar Maurice "Bob" Carpenter; and brother-in-law, Johnie Nettles.
She is survived by her daughter, Lauren Channing Carpenter of Moss Point, MS; nephew, Danny Andrew Saucier of Montgomery, AL; cousin, Judy Radcliff of Meridian, MS; cousin, Eloise Marshall Anderson of Meridian, MS; and a host of cousins and friends.
She also leaves friends Alpha Teresa Banks Blair, Marie Heim, Lorraine Jones, Jimmy Manning, Rochelle McCorvey, Deborah Thompson, and Evelyn Webb.
No services are planned at this time.
Riemann Family Funeral Home, Gulfport, is honored to serve the Carpenter family.
